Converting a Low Value Natural Gas Molecule Into a High Value Gasoline Molecule
Interprovincial Fuel Solutions (IFS) is advancing a world-scale low carbon intensity gasoline facility proposed to be located in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, within the Edmonton Capital Region, with Strathcona County identified as a potential host location. The Heartland is Canada’s largest hydrocarbon processing cluster and one of the world’s most concentrated energy and petrochemical industrial zones, home to more than 40 major industrial operators and tens of billions of dollars in existing capital investment. The region provides a purpose-built environment for large-scale energy infrastructure, with integrated utilities, shared industrial services, and coordinated municipal support designed to accelerate project development.
The location offers exceptional industrial integration and feedstock advantages. Strathcona County hosts Canada’s largest hydrocarbon refining cluster, including major refining and petrochemical facilities and long-established energy infrastructure. The Heartland’s clustered ecosystem provides access to natural gas and industrial feedstocks, shared utilities, carbon capture and storage infrastructure, and a highly skilled workforce, supporting reliable operations and long-term scalability for large manufacturing projects.
The site also delivers outstanding logistics connectivity. Alberta’s Industrial Heartland offers dual Class 1 rail access via Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) and Canadian National (CN), enabling flexible and competitive rail distribution across North American markets. Direct access to major provincial highway networks and the broader Edmonton transportation corridor further supports efficient product movement and supply chain integration.
Together, these advantages position the IFS Alberta Industrial Heartland project as a strategically located energy infrastructure platform; combining world-class industrial integration, secure feedstock and utility access, and superior transportation connectivity to support large-scale production of low-carbon fuels and long-term market competitiveness.
Interprovincial Fuel Solutions (IFS) is proposing to advance a world-scale low carbon intensity gasoline facility in Medicine Hat, Alberta, to be located within the city’s Northwest Industrial Area; one of Western Canada’s most infrastructure-ready locations for large energy and petrochemical projects. The site offers heavy-industrial zoning, large development parcels, and proximity to established industrial operators, creating a strong foundation for reliable, long-term operations.
Medicine Hat provides exceptional utility advantages for energy-intensive facilities, including a long history of industrial gas use and owning and operating its own municipal electric and gas utilities, providing reliable power delivery and coordinated utility services. Established industrial water and municipal infrastructure further support large-scale process operations and future expansion.
The proposed location offers strong logistics and market access, with proximity to CPKC Class 1 rail service and direct access to the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1), enabling efficient distribution to Canadian, U.S., and export fuel markets. Medicine Hat’s established petrochemical and manufacturing base provides a skilled workforce, industrial services ecosystem, and a supportive environment for major industrial investment.
Together, these advantages position the IFS Medicine Hat project as a strategically located energy infrastructure development; combining secure feedstock, reliable utilities, and efficient transportation access to support large-scale production of low-carbon fuels.”
